The structure may be viewed as either a parallel arrangement of crystalline and accessible regions, representing an equal strain situation, or a serial arrangement of the components, representing an equal stress situation. Molecular deformation studies using FTIR indicated the former arrangement as dominating in wood and cellulose fibres (Salmén and Bergström 2009)
